FEMA PPE Priority List; Free Decontamination Service; FDA Updates

The ADA has been working closely with FEMA and other government agencies on PPE for dental professionals for many weeks. As of May 4, 2020, dentists and dental professionals are now fourth on the FEMA priority list for PPE. This is a significant accomplishment by the ADA government affairs team as dental professionals were originally excluded from the priority list and then moved to number seven. At the state level, TDA is working with Governor Abbott and his emergency management team on methods to distribute state-acquired FEMA PPE to dentists.

The Battelle CCDS Critical Care Decontamination System™ is designed to work on N95 respirators for the removal of the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2)—the virus strain that causes COVID-19.

It can decontaminate the same respirator up to 20 times without degrading N95 filter mask performance.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has authorized an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for the emergency use of the Battelle Decontamination System for use in decontaminating compatible N95 and N95-equivalent respirators for reuse by healthcare personnel.

The service is free-of-charge for dentists. Shipping fees are covered.

Please review the Battelle website to learn details and to enroll in the service.

On May 7, 2020, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an updated list of authorized imported, non-NIOSH approved respirators manufactured in China. There are now 14 approved manufacturers, with a substantial number of manufacturers removed from the previous published list due to the masks not meeting U.S. standards. Please refer to the FDA’s webpage, “Certain Filtering Facepiece Respirators from China May Not Provide Adequate Respiratory Protection - Letter to Health Care Providers.”

According to TDA Perks Supplies, “Per the FDA, manufacturers whose respirators were formerly on the Authorized Respirators list may submit a request to have those respirators reauthorized and the FDA has stated that it anticipates updating the list of Authorized Respirators on a regular basis.  If and when respirators are reauthorized by the FDA, we will consider updating those product listings accordingly.”

TDA and TDA Perks Supplies will continue to actively monitor this situation and communicate updates to TDA members.
